What are Chakras
Originating from the Sanskrit word meaning “wheel”, Chakra (pronounced “cha”-“kra” with a resounding “ch”) is a spinning vortex “wheel” believed to vitalize the physical body by giving and receiving energy, keeping the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical body in balance.
Typically numbered as seven, the chakras are located on our bodies, vertically aligned from the base of the spine to the top of our head. It is essential that each of these spinning/swirling wheels of energy remain open, aligned and fluid like as they help connect our mind, body and soul. Chakra energies in our bodies may be blocked during dark, rough times, and can act as an influence in the contribution of physical and mental weakness.
I am Thoughtful | I am Understanding
Located at the middle of the head (at its highest point), the basic principle of the Crown Chakra is enlightenment and spiritual connection to our higher selves, others, and ultimately, to the divine (our purest being). It is the source and starting point for the manifestation of all other chakra energies. Considered the place where we started our life journey, it is also where we will return once our development ends. Allowing our personal energies to become one with the divine/higher power (whether you call it, Source, God, Allah, Universe, Light, etc.), the awareness given to us by the Crown Chakra goes far beyond the knowledge conveyed by the Third Eye Chakra, as here we are no longer separated from the object of our perception. Anything we understood intellectually and later intuitively now reaches the point of complete comprehension (greater understanding, acceptance, and bliss).
The cerebrum and the pineal body gland are associated.
Third Eye Chakra
I am Conscious | I am Intuitive
Located a fingerbreadth above the bridge of the nose (between both eyes) in the centre of the forehead, the Third Eye Chakra encompasses all senses, including extrasensory perception. As it is the seat of attainment of consciousness, it allows attributes to one’s individual sense of perception and vision. Our intuition, wisdom, as well as our ability to interpret and envision our thoughts and outlooks are governed by this chakra. The Third Eye enables us to interpret and envision our thoughts and outlooks, tap into our intuition, use our wisdom, manifest our dreams, and help contribute to a focused path.
The face, eyes, ears, nose, sinuses, cerebellum, central nervous system and the pituitary gland are associated.
I am Expressive
Located at the throat (between the depression of the neck and the larynx) and being an ether element (medium of sound, spoken words), the basic principle of the Throat Chakra is the resonance of being. It helps us express everything that is alive within us (our laughing, crying, feelings of love, happiness, anxiety, depression, aggression, our intentions and desires as well as our ideas, knowledge and perceptions of inner worlds). As an agent for communication, when in balance, the Throat Chakra enables us to effectively communicate in any given situation and express ourselves creatively.
The neck, throat and jaw, ears, voice, trachea, bronchial tubes, upper lungs, esophagus, arms and thyroid gland are associated.
I am Positive | I am Loving
Located at the centre of the breast at the height of the heart, the Heart Chakra connects the three lower physical and emotional chakras (Root, Sacral and Solar Plexus) and the three higher mental and spiritual chakras (Throat, Third Eye and Crown). An air element, the purpose of this chakra is to achieve perfect union through love, influencing your friendly/emotional relationships. One’s yearning for deep, intimate contact, for oneness, harmony and love (even if love comes in the guise of sadness/sorrow, pain, fear of separation, loss of love, etc.) all originate from the Heart Chakra. When it is in its most open and purest state, it forms the centre of true, unconditional love which exists only for its own sake and which therefore can neither be possessed nor lost.
The heart, upper back (including the thorax and the thoracic cavity), the lower area of the lungs, the blood (and the circulation), the skin and the thymus gland are associated to the Heart Chakra.
Solar Plexus Chakra
I am Powerful | I am Spirited
Located two fingers above the navel, the Solar Plexus Chakra’s basic principle is the shaping of being. Assigned to the element of fire, not only which nurtures our ethereal bodies) but it is also where our emotional energy radiates from. Acting as the foundation for one’s personality, our personal and professional successes are found within, balancing our confidence (allowing us to be sure of ourselves), impacting our cheerfulness and the respect one has towards others.
The lower back, abdomen, digestive system, stomach, liver, spleen, gallbladder, autonomic nervous system, and the pancreas are associated to the Solar Plexus.
I am Passionate | I am Sensual
Located between the Root Chakra (the base of your spine) and your naval, the Sacral Chakra is the centre of unfiltered primordial emotions, desire, sexual energies, procreation and creativity. As a water element, the Sacral Chakra is the source of all biological life which influences our interpersonal relationships, especially those of a romantic nature.
The lower abdomen/pelvic girdle, reproductive organs, kidneys, bladder and the circulatory system (liquids such as blood, lymph, gastric juice, semen/sperm) as well as the gonads (ovaries, prostate gland, testicles) are associated to the Sacral Chakra.
I am Me
Located at the base of the spine in the tail bone area, the Root Chakra is the closest to the earth giving earthly stability (grounding). Associated to your flight or fight response, the root chakra forms the vital foundation for all the higher chakras and is the source of the life force, your physical will of being.
All solid body parts (spinal column, bones, teeth and nails) along with anus, rectum, colon, prostate gland, and finally blood (and the building cells) as well as the suprarenal gland are linked to the Root Chakra.
